Best Free Construction Safety Software in 2026

Free and freemium safety tools for toolbox talks, incident reporting, site inspections, and OSHA compliance. Tested options for contractors on a budget.

April 7, 2026

Safety software on a construction site does two things: it keeps your crew from getting hurt, and it keeps your documentation tight when OSHA shows up. Small contractors skip both because the enterprise platforms cost $5,000+ per year. They do not have to. Several safety tools offer free tiers or freemium plans that cover the basics.

The tools below work on a phone, handle inspections and incident reports, and keep records you can pull up in two taps when an auditor asks.

What Free Gets You

Free safety plans cover the core workflow: create an inspection checklist, complete it on a phone, attach photos, and store the report. Most include incident reporting with timestamps and witness fields. What free does not cover: advanced analytics, custom workflows, multi-site rollups, and integrations with your PM software. Those cost money, and you may never need them.

The Tools

SafetyCulture iAuditor

The most capable free tier in construction safety. You get unlimited inspections, a massive template library (OSHA, ISO, custom), photo and annotation tools, and automatic PDF report generation. The free plan supports a small team. Paid plans add analytics, scheduling, and sensor integrations. Start here if you have never used safety software before. The template library alone saves you hours of checklist creation.

GoAudits

Mobile inspection platform with a clean interface. Create custom audit templates, complete them offline, and sync when you have signal. Corrective action tracking lets you assign fixes to crew members with due dates. The free plan covers basic inspections. If your sites are in areas with poor cell coverage, the offline capability makes GoAudits a practical pick.

Safesite

Designed for construction safety from the ground up. Hazard identification, toolbox talk documentation, near-miss reporting, and safety meeting logs. The free plan covers a single project with core features. Safesite generates a safety score based on your inspection frequency and incident rates, which gives you a metric to show GCs during prequalification.

Salus

Canadian-built safety management platform with strong compliance templates for both US and Canadian regulations. Worker orientation tracking, certification expiry alerts, and digital safety forms. The free plan covers basic documentation. If you work cross-border or in Canada, Salus handles provincial OHS requirements that US-only tools miss.

Donesafe

Cloud-based EHS platform with a free starter option. Incident management, hazard reporting, and inspection checklists. The interface is clean and the mobile app works well in the field. Donesafe is stronger on the environmental and health side, so if your projects require environmental compliance documentation alongside safety, this covers both.

Contractor Foreman

Not a dedicated safety tool, but the free plan includes safety meeting documentation, toolbox talks, incident reports, and daily logs. If you already use Contractor Foreman for project management, the safety features are built in. No separate app, no extra login. The trade-off: the safety features are basic compared to dedicated platforms.

When to Upgrade

Stay on free tiers as long as your crew fits within the user limits and you can handle inspections without scheduling automation. Upgrade when you need multi-site analytics, automatic inspection assignments, or integration with your project management platform. Most of these tools price by user count, so costs scale with your crew size.

If you run fewer than 20 workers across one or two active sites, free plans cover your compliance baseline. Above that, the paid tiers start paying for themselves in time saved on report distribution alone.
